China is the largest toy exporter across the world - around 75% of all the world's toys are created in the region – but the retail cost of one good quality toy in the western market is often even more than 6 months' wages for a Chinese toy manufacturing plant employee . In order to depict the difficulty of bulk toy manufacturing , photographer Michael Wolf made a large-scale installation where he included 20 ,000 utilized plastic toys all manufactured in China surrounding significant sized pictures of the employees who make them . Wolf named the task “The True Toy Story” . The work portrays the human presence behind mass-produced things and provides visitors with a visceral , immersive know-how that evokes the sensation of density endemic to urban regions of the region .
The set up was first generated in Hong Kong in 2004 . Wolf interacted with 3 assistants for 10 hours every day for 3 days to mount the photographs and toys in a dense , overlapping arrangement across every single inch of available wall space . This has been since recreated at several places all over the world .
