Bishop Rock: The smallest island in the world

Bishop Rock is a small rocky outcrop jutting from the sea, 4 miles west of the Scilly Islands . The rock rises from a depth of 45 meters to expose a point 46 meters long by 16 meters wide. In this narrow ledge is the lighthouse, which makes the Bishop Rock smallest island in the world, with a building, as recognized by the Guinness Book of Records.

The rocks around the Scilly islands caused the ruin of many boats over the years. When Sir Cloudesley Shovel squadron of the British fleet sank in 1707, with 2,000 men, the Elder Brothers of Trinity House decided that the lighting in the Isles of Scilly, which at that time consisted of only the old lighthouse St. Agnes, was inadequate, and decided to build a lighthouse on the westernmost part of the Bishop Rock.
